19 marzo Phagwah!Well, for those of you who don't know, March 15th was widely celebrated in Guyana as Phagwah. Phagwah is the craziest, funnest holiday I have been part of yet! It is a Hindu festival, but it's origins were difficult for me to find out. Many who celebrate it can't seem to remember how it began. I heard that it had something to do with someone who was hunting in the forest and happened to look upon a god who no one was ever supposed to look at, and that person was burnt to a crisp for their misdeed. I dunno, something like that.
So how does one celebrate Phagwah exactly? All-white clothes are worn. The day begins with water throwing at people. Yes, you go around and throw water at people all morning. Then, in the afternoon powdered paint is thrown and rubbed on people, especially on their face. So me and some friends got on our white duds and headed to the Indian Cultural Association in GT where there were approximately a thousand or more people playing Phagwah and covered with every color of paint imaginable! There was an Indian band playing and people everywhere were dancing and throwing paint powder at one another. So, we joined in the fun! We ended the evening with dinner at the Dutch Bottle Cafe and sang along to Neil Diamond tunes at the top of our voices, much to the pleasure of the waiters and other diners!
By the way, be warned.... I plan to initiate Phagwah celebrations in Canada next mid-March.... so watch out and wear white!
